How are my car’s brakes still functional even though they’re rusty?

This goes for my car, I recently swapped from steel rims to alloys and I can now see the rotors. Blew my mind how rusty they look. Yet, car’s brakes work great. Is it just the outside thats corroded? I want to know more. Please explain.

They usually only develop a little bit of surface rust after a rainstorm or if the car is been sitting stationary for a long time. The rust gets scraped off by the brake pads almost immediately after you start driving.

It’s just a bit of surface rust. It will get rubbed off as soon as you do any real braking.

After a short drive, using the brakes, look again. The friction surfaces will have worn the surface rust away, these areas will shine.

If the flat of the brake disc, inside or out, is still rusty after enthusiastic brake use, you have a stuck caliper , and it’s time to consult a good mechanic
