Seat belts in cars work with airbags. While the seat belt holds most of you torso in place, your head can still whip around during a crash causing a significant head injury. You don’t have airbags on planes. So instead, they tell you to brace by bending forward. This makes it so your head minimizes it’s travel during crash, which helps mitigate head injuries. This of course is only effective when the pilot can do a soft crash landing.
