Let’s break through how the link would work.

Let’s say I’m on Google and search for something and see an ad that interests me. I click the link.

Here’s what happens…

1. The link is to some google domain (i.e., ads.google.com/redirect/something). This page does two things. It counts the ad click on the Google side, and it redirects you to the URL that the person buying the ad chose.

2. The redirected link may go directly to the end page, but more likely opens to some ad agency who acts as a middle-man. They also want to track the clicks, so their page logs the traffic, and then redirects you to the URL of the actual endpoint.

3. The person lands on the domain for the business who the ad was for. However, they might have used a shortcut page that then has to redirect you to the actual page. This would allow them to also track how many people came in from the ad campaign.

Basically, 3 different interest groups want to track how many people click the link, and none of them will necessarily trust the data coming from the other end.
