Why do we need 8 glasses of water per day if our body just pees out most of it?

8 glasses or 64oz is a rough estimate. some people need more, some less. but 8 glasses is enough so the average person won’t be dehydrated. when you pee, it’s not just water you’re peeing out. it’s also waste products, namely urea. nearly all your biological processes use water and your body stores a lot inherently, but it needs to be replenished. it’s like when you take a shower, if you use too little water, you won’t be able to clean effectively. if you use too much water, you’re just wasting water. similar concept here.

We use a certain amount of water for a large variety of processes in the body, and some water is lost through respiration, perspiration ect. But the reason we need excess water is that water is used to flush toxins and excess nutrients out of the body. We should be peeing a lot because we need to excrete waste to keep things in balance. This is why drinking saltwater will dehydrate you. It takes more water to flush out the extra salt from your body than you would be drinking. Diffusion works best when the water that nutrients are diffusing into are at very low nutrient and ion concentrations, so having a constantly supply of fresh water into the body is the best way to ensure you can maintain balance.

what comes out of your body isn’t the water you just drunk.

You’re expelling “used” water. Don’t forget that the human body is composed of more than 65% (I never remember the correct amount) of water, so you need to keep it hydrated all the time

Also, 5 cups of water is the wrong number. You should drink 50ml (1.7 ounce) of water per 1kg (2.2 pound) of weight.
So, let’s pretend you weight 100kg/220lbs, you should drink 5L/8.5oz of water per day.

We actually don’t need 8 glasses of water per day. How much water you need will vary from person to person and will be dependent on what you’re doing. A person sitting at a desk for work will need less than someone doing hard work in the hot sun. Drink when you’re thirsty and you should be good.

Our body maintains a precise ratio of salt to water in our cells and blood. If we don’t keep our water intake up, the salt concentration will increase in our blood. This will cause water to leech out of the cells in our tissues and organs.

Read somewhere it depends on your weight. Here:
“In general, you should try to drink between half an ounce and an ounce of water for each pound you weigh, every day.” For example, if you weigh 150 pounds, that would be 75 to 150 ounces of water a day.
