Why is Coca-Cola able to remove rust but does not hurt the stomach?

In: Chemistry

You’re not made of rust.

Coke contains carbonic acid and phosphoric acid that can help dissolve iron oxide and iron hydroxide. Your stomach spends all day filled with more highly concentrated hydrochloric acid, and it’s well prepared to handle acidity within reason.

Your stomach acid would also eat through rust if you ever decided to barf on an old car.

It’ll hurt your stomach after a while. Or if you have a sensitive stomach. My problem with drinking coke is that I get kidney stones if i drink too much. Forget stomach problems, I’ll take an ulcer over peeing razor blades any day.

The same reason that salt dissolves snails and orange zest cleans grime from wood but both are edible to you. Different chemicals react to different things differently.

Your stomach contains some strong acids, but your stomach is evolved to handle those acids. It’s all a matter of having the right chemical in the right place.
