Animal tunnel systems

Moles, gophers, prairie dogs, etc… how do they not have collapsed tunnels after it rains? I get that they dig upward but if the water seeps through the dirt wouldn’t it still collapse? And if they don’t have food storage and water takes too long to evaporate or absorb from the downward tunnels would they just starve or would they tunnel upward from their current location? My brain cannot comprehend how they survive.
