Eli5: How do games like diablo 3 stay online without subscriptions and/or microtransactions?

Diablo 3 is on it’s 28th season so there’s clearly a team that’s developing new content for it and maintaining the servers. Are game sales alone really enough to keep it profitable? Or am I missing something else?

“New” seasons have been automatically generated for a while, with no real new content in forever. No new gear, maybe some new alt art done by an unpaid intern. At this point, they’re funding operations by cutting costs and new sales, which surprisingly keep happening. The volume of players is likely low enough that they can run the game on spare capacity from other more popular game title servers.

They can’t rely on initial sales alone but it’s in their best interest to keep the player base. As long as people are playing it they are going to have the launcher installed on their computer which means they can advertise different games in their catalogue. There are also expansion packs for the game which allows them to make more money but not have to spend lots of money on game development in comparison to a brand new game.

everything is handled locally, the servers are just authentication and friend list. the server load is low so there a no excessive resource consumption even Diablo II from the 2000 still online.
