How is data transferred over wires? Example: The internet through ethernet cables.

Electrical signals turned on and off. It’s like flipping a light switch on and off, but millions of times per second.

It’s essentially just like morse code but the pulses don’t represent letters, they represent ones and zeros. These pulses can be electrical in nature or pulses of light, visible or otherwise. Electrical pulses travel through metal wire. The pulses themselves are comprised of the movement of electrons in the wire. Light pulses travel through a fiber optic, air, or things that are see through to them. If your eyes could detect wifi signals they would look like flashes of light. But wifi signals are microwave wavelengths which are not visible to us.

Everything in computers is a 0 or a 1. A 0 and 1 together make a bit. A few of these make a byte and so on. The internet, then, connects you to where the information you want is and you and that source pulse electricity back and forth. Each pulse on is a one. Each lack of a pulse is a zero. The computer has a specific timing for telling how long a pulse is supposed to be so that a long string of ones or zeroes doesn’t just look like a long one or a long zero.

The internet makes these connections by basically asking other computers with your ISP to make those connections for you.

In many places, fiber optics are starting to replace standard metal cables since it allows literally light speed transmission of data, simply blinking a light on and off to send the signal, rather than having to rely on pulses of electricity over the friction of wire.

Data gets scrambled on one end. Bits of data travel faster through the cable. Bits of data get put together at the other end.

Like others have said, it’s essentially Morse code using electricity.
