how does our spice tolerance change?

Before I moved out I had the whitest palette known to man – one teaspoon of chilli powder in any curry was PLENTY. Now I’ve moved out and cooked for myself for a few years I can eat much spicier food without batting an eyelid. If I cook for my parents, something that doesn’t even taste spicy to me will make steam come out of their ears! How does our spice tolerance change over time?

Like any other tolerance, the more you’re exposed to it, the higher your tolerance becomes.
